How To Fix Lawn Mouse Damage
Every see irregular paths carved out of your turf in the early spring? Chances are that is from mice busily scurrying and scuffling around beneath the long winter snow pack. But this isn’t just an “after winter” problem and mouse damage can happen at any time during the year. We just happen to notice it more after winter because the lawn has been covered and not actively growing so as to cover up the ongoing damage.
So is mouse damage serious to the lawn and can I fix it? Yep, you can fix it pretty easily and I’m gonna help ya out… cuz that’s what we do here.
How To Fix Mouse Damage
The first thing you should do is lightly rake out the trails you see there. These areas contain compacted roots and stems where the mice shredded everything making their trails. I’m not looking for you to actually remove or pull anything up, just rustle it and loosen it a bit.
Once you rake it, throw a little fresh grass seed in there, pretty thick. The key to growing grass seed in any areas, including mouse damaged areas, is to keep it moist until fully germinated. Now the good news for you is that in spring, we are getting plenty of dew on the ground each morning, and afternoon rain, keeping that seed just right wet! In addition, the temps are good, so germination should work out pretty well. Another positive here is that the trails will keep the seed in and won’t allow it to wash away!
Proper Fertilization
I say this in just about every article here on Natural Green Lawn, but fertilizer can fix a lot of issues like mouse damage. Good nutrients in the soil will promote the thickening process in the turf, and you’d be surprised just how much grass can grow in a few months with good fert, proper watering and tall mowing. BTW, it is also important you mow your lawn the right way all season anyway!
Put it all together, raking–seeding–watering–fertilizing–mowing tall — and you have the makings of some fast fix for mouse damage!
